•Choose a Flash Card and test yourself. Can you name that asana? Learn both the Sanskrit name and roman transliteration.
•Do you know how to move into and out of an asana – the vinyasa-krama? Full simple teaching instructions, both written and illustrated, are supplied.
•Can you draw the stickman figure – it’s sometimes harder than it looks?

These Flash Cards contain a wealth of information in an easy to use interface, with all the information you need in one place. No need to be carrying more than your iPad around with you – leave your textbooks and notes at home. There is no other Yoga App in the Apple Store currently like it.

Although designed as a learning tool in the Viniyoga tradition, the knowledge gained can be a relevant base for anyone studying yoga asana.

SO, BRIEFLY, WHAT IS VINIYOGA?
Although today the term ‘Viniyoga’ is popularly used to describe the yoga taught by the late Sri T Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, who runs the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in India, it is not actually a ‘style’ of yoga, but is an approach using Yoga’s many tools – asana, pranayama, meditation, mudra, chanting etc. The emphasis in the teaching is on creating a personal yoga practice for the individual by selecting the right tools depending on the situation at the time. It is about making the yoga suit the individual, rather than the individual suit the yoga. This also makes it ideal for Yoga Therapy.

If you are not familiar with Viniyoga, you might find some of the asanas in this App to be shown slightly differently to the way you know them, that is because they are the classical asanas shown in their final form without any variations or modifications. If this is the case, just use your knowledge to adjust the instructions to suit, it could just be as simple as turning a foot in a different direction.

EXPLORING THE APP
The no-clutter interface makes the App really simple to use.
•On the right are 6 tabbed classification sections, based on the asanas effect on the spine – Samasthiti (straight spine), Pascimatana (forward bend), Parsva (side bend), Parivrtti (twist), Purvatana (back bend), Viparita (inversion). Just tap a tab to be taken to that section.
•The first page of each classification is an interactive index table of all the asanas in that section, listed in columns depending on the form of the asana – standing, sitting, kneeling, lying. Click on a specific asana to be taken to that page or just swipe sideways to scroll through the section page-by-page.
•Each asana page appears with only the stickman figure showing, ready for you to test yourself straight away. Can you name the asana?
•If not, tap the ‘Show/Hide’ button on the top left to reveal the asanas Sanskrit name, roman transliteration and breakdown of the Sanskrit.
•Can you remember the vinyasa-krama instructions to teach and draw this sequence? Just pull up the tab at the bottom left and these will be revealed.

The benefits of this app are many:
•Easy to use and find information all in one place.
•Learn anytime/anywhere without the need of carrying around textbooks and notes.
•Test yourself whilst commuting to work, keep it open on your desk or anywhere else you can rest your iPad!

THINGS TO NOTE
This App is not meant for self-practice, but the knowledge gained can give you a deeper understanding to help improve your own practice.

COMING SOON
This is just the first in a series of Apps. Viniyoga Asana II will be released later in 2015.
